Lip Fillers - Winning Smile Dental & Aesthetic Clinic

What are lip fillers?

Lip fillers are a type of non-surgical cosmetic treatment used to enhance the shape, volume, and symmetry of the lips. It involves injecting a gel-like substance, usually hyaluronic acid, into the lips to make them fuller, more defined, or better balanced.

What is it used to treat?

Lip filler is primarily used as a cosmetic treatment. It can also address functional or age-related issues. Lip filler can be used to treat;

Like any cosmetic treatment, you must consult with your injector to see if you are suitable. Good candidates for lip filler may include those who:

  • Want to enhance natural lip volume.
  • Have asymmetrical or uneven lips.
  • Desire better lip definition.
  • Have good general health.
  • Have realistic expectations.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Are over 18 years of age.

People who may not be suitable for the treatment include those who:

  • Have a history of severe allergies or anaphylaxis.
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Have an active cold sore or skin infection.
  • Have bleeding disorders or are on blood thinners
  • Expect permanent results or an extreme transformation after one session.

Alternative treatments

There are alternatives to lip filler. These include:

The treatment process – What happens during a lip filler procedure?

Lip filler has a clear treatment process.

To begin, you must have a consultation with a licensed professional, specifically a dentist. At this point, the dentist will assess your lip shape, facial proportions, medical history, and goals. They will discuss your filler type, amount, risks, costs, and expected results.

Following this, the dentist will clean and numb the area with a topical cream to reduce discomfort. The filler is then injected with a fine needle into the target areas of the lips. These include the lip line, the cupid’s bow, and the lip body. The dentist will then massage the lips and gently distribute the hyaluronic acid. This should take 15–30 minutes.

Following the injection, the patient may experience some mild swelling and bruising. This usually subsides within a few days. To help with this, you can:

  • Apply a cold wrapped compress.
  • Avoid makeup on the lips.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Not massage the lips unless instructed.

Often, the dentist will schedule a review 1–2 weeks after the procedure to assess the results and decide if a top-up is needed. Following this, you may need a top-up every 6–12 months. This is usually determined by the filler type and your metabolism.

Questions about Lip Fillers

Frequently Asked Questions

Lip fillers typically last 6-12 months. A number of factors influence the longevity of the filler. These include;

  • Type of filler used
  • Your body’s metabolism – a faster metabolism breaks down filler more quickly.
  • Amount injected
  • Lifestyle – smoking and sun exposure can shorten filler longevity.
  • Frequency of treatments

Most lip fillers are made using hyaluronic acid. This is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps to retain moisture, add volume and keeps the skin supple.

If filler is properly placed, it will not make your face look fat, but instead it will enhance your natural structure, restore lost volume, and improve symmetry.

People who look puffy or ‘fat’ usually have had;

  • Too much filling
  • Layered filler repeatedly without dissolving
  • An injector who lacks understanding of facial anatomy.

Swelling after lip filler is normal and typically lasts 2-3 days. Most of the swelling subsides after 48 hours, however, some mild swelling could be experienced for up to a week.

Tips to reduce swelling include;

  • Apply a cold compress (wrapped) to the lips for short intervals during the 24 hours,
  • Sleep with your head elevated the first few nights.
  • Avoid alcohol, spicy food and salty meals for the first 2-3 days.
  • Limit alcohol
  • Limit exercise
  • Avoid touching/massaging lips
  • Drink plenty water
  • Avoid smoking

Lip fillers have grown in popularity in recent times. While there are many advantages to lip filler, the drawbacks must also be considered.

Advantages of lip filler include;

  • Instant results – enhancements are evident immediately after the treatment, with the full results evident after two weeks.
  • Non-surgical – there is no anesthesia or cutting involved.
  • Reversible – If you are unhappy with the results, the filler can be dissolved.

However, drawbacks include;

  • Temporary results – filler lasts 6-12 months, meaning it must be topped up.
  • Side effects – swelling and bruising is a common side effect of lip filler.
  • Cost – filler costs €300-€600 per area.
  • Risk of overfilling
  • Possible complications – these include lumps, uneven texture, infection or allergic reaction

After getting lip fillers it is important to follow the appropriate aftercare to maximise your results. Below is a list of what NOT to do after lip fillers.

  • Do not touch, press or massage your lips as you risk displacing the filler, leading to uneven results.
  • Avoid lipstick and lip products for 24 hours
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours. This increased blood flow can worsen swelling and bruising.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours
  • Do not expose the lips to heat for 48 hours. This includes saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms or direct sun exposure.
  • Do not smoke or use straws.
  • Do not sleep face down – try to avoid putting pressure on the lips

The cost of lip filler in Ireland ranges from €300-€600 per area. The cost varies depending on the type of filler used and the amount of filler used. The filler should last 6-12 months and therefore, patients should expect to top up their filler 1-2 times a year.

It is not recommended to get lip filler while pregnant. This is for a number of reasons including;

  • There is no data indicating that fillers are safe for pregnant individuals or the fetus.
  • Hormonal changes may affect how the filler settles.
  • Risk of complications – while these are rare, the possible risk of a complication (e.g. allergic reaction) is not ideal during pregnancy.
  • It is a non-essential cosmetic procedure.

If you develop cold sores after lip filler, it is important to follow these steps.

  • Contact your provider and let them know you have developed a cold sore. They may prescribe antiviral medication to treat the cold sores.
  • Start antiviral treatment promptly.
  • Avoid touching and picking the area. This could spread the virus.
  • Use a cold compress (wrapped in cloth)
  • Avoid makeup or lip products to the area.
